Cpl. Jayme R. Vines - U.S. Marine Corps

Born January 20, 1987 in Euclid, Ohio to Ron & Susan Vines and raised the majority of his life in Mentor, Ohio with his brother Cory and sister Kristyn, Jayme had a childhood like most others. With his passion for music, cars and with his ability to educate himself in many of his endeavors', Jayme’s goals were set for his life.

Before graduation from Mentor High School in 2005, Jayme enlisted in the Marine Corps on the Delayed Entry Program, with his chosen MOS, of Rifleman. After finishing boot camp at Parris Island, SC, and combat training in North Carolina, Jayme was offered to serve in our Nations capital at the Marine Corps Barracks at 8th & I Streets.  Among his many ceremonial duties, Jayme was fortunate to have served at the White House, as well as accompany the President to the tomb of the unknown soldiers Veteran’s Day 2006.

A year later Jayme was then transferred to the 1st Battalion 4th Marines, (Whatever It Takes) Weapons Company, in Oceanside, California’s Camp Pendleton. Jayme's first tour of Iraq led him to Al Qaim, Iraq in the Al Anbar Province where he served at  forward operating base Da Nang. While serving at this post,  Jayme was a vehicle Commander in daily patrols near the Syrian border, where he earned his Combat Action Ribbon, as well as personal accommodations for his service. Though he would seldom speak of his duties while in Iraq, he always mention how precious life was to him.

After the 1/4’s return from Iraq, and while on leave at home in December of 2007, Jayme met Maria Ferris of Mentor-On-Lake, and they married in May of 2008. Maria stayed behind in Mentor while Jayme returned to Oceanside to begin training for his second tour of Iraq, set to deploy in early October of 2008. In this time, Jayme had earned his 3rd Rifle Expert Badge by qualifying top of his unit. This award meant the world to Jayme, it was something he was very proud of, and honestly, only fellow Marines could appreciate.

Two weeks before the 1/4 was set to deploy to Fallujah, Iraq for their second tour in as many years, Maria returned to Oceanside to be with Jayme for family weekend. It was on September 19th at about 5:00 P.M. while out riding with a friend, Jayme’s life was taken from all of us in a split moment when his motorcycle slipped out from underneath him from a pile of gravel left on the highway. Jayme was buried in Mentor Municipal Cemetery with full military honors on September 26th, and lies head to head with his best friend, Cpl Joshua S. Harmon. Jayme’s commitment to life, loyalty, to family and friends, fellow Marines, and his wife Maria, will always be his legacy. Cpl. Jayme Ryan Vines, you will always be in our hearts, and forever in our souls.

Semper Fi!
